Imagine this scenario- A grape farmer in the middle of the season is deciding on harvest times. They fly a small drone over the vineyard. The drone is maneuvered close to the grapes to get a better look. The drone takes pictures that the farmer can later view to determine if the grapes need more water and pesticides, and when they will be harvested. Industries like farming, real estate, event planning, and marketing are moving towards utilizing this technology. We hope to prepare Fresno State students to use this technology in emerging projects and fields.
The Department of Industrial Technology at Fresno State is developing a course on Drone Technology. We hope to provide students with foundations of drone theory and aeronautics, drone components and control mechanisms, flight and airspace, safety regulations, and image processing techniques for agricultural applications. We will also prepare them for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification.
We also plan to give students hands-on experience building drones from kits and flying drones over fields to take pictures and collect data. Students will also use image processing software to analyze these pictures to help with improved decision-making regarding irrigation needs, pesticide requirements, and harvesting times.
This crowdfunding campaign will allow us to buy drones and drone kits for use in the class to give our students enriching hands-on experiences with this cutting-edge technology that has numerous applications even beyond agriculture. We want our students to be better prepared with the necessary skills in managing technology as they enter today’s workforce.
A gift of this amount or less could help us bring drone technology to more students!
