STRETCH GOAL REACHED
Thanks to the amazing support of our donors, we have stretched our goal for this project. We are still raising funds to honor Dr. Howard and Dr. Ng and their amazing contribution to Fresno State. Keep sharing the project, encourage others to give, and support our ASAM program as we grow this award. Thank you very much!
"Dr. Katsuyo Howard saw who I could become before I ever thought about what I could be early on as an undergraduate. In my interactions with her, she had a way to subtly push me to dream beyond where I was. She invested in learning about my community, experiencing where I came from, and the challenges I faced as a Southeast Asian. She was a champion in educating people about the uniqueness of each Asian ethnic group and the approach to best support them."
-Phong Yang, Associate Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management
Dr. Franklin Ng and Dr. Katsuyo Howard
As pioneers and educators, Dr. Franklin Ng and Dr. Katsuyo Howard worked at and retired from Fresno State as long-time professors Emeritus of Asian American Studies (ASAM) and Counseling. Dr. Ng is a scholar-teacher who encouraged students to grow and achieve their best selves. Dr. Ng also produced many Asian American studies books and was the national president of the Association of Asian American Studies.
“Dr. Howard was more than my professor. She coached, mentored, and guided me through some of the most challenging times in my life. I would not be here today without her love, support, and friendship. She will always be a blessing in my life.”

The Dr.(s) Ng and Howard Student Academic-Community Excellence Award
Help the Asian American Studies Program/Minor (later Major) support students who have demonstrated dedication to serving or supporting the Asian American communities. The Dr. Franklin Ng and Dr. Katsuyo Howard Studies Award is the first award at Fresno State dedicated to supporting students' education and future research in Asian American/Asian Studies, especially in California’s Central Valley. ASAM Studies Minor students come from various disciplines across the university, representing every college and almost every degree.
Being given this $500 award will significantly impact students of any background who are dedicated to helping the Asian American Community. This award will provide critical financial support as well as recognition of their achievement that will help them succeed in their careers and graduate school.
This award will have a positive impact on our future student leaders in their pursuit of their degrees at Fresno State. The funding from these awards helps to alleviate students’ financial barriers, such as the cost of books, transportation, housing, and food. Honor the accomplishments and careers of DR.
