The Construction Management Department in the Lyles College of Engineering at Fresno State welcomes you to join us as we raise funds for our students to design and build Emergency Sleeping Cabins for our community. This exciting project will not only provide a unique and interesting educational experience for our students but will also produce actual structures that can be used by our community.
We estimate that the Emergency Sleeping Cabins (ESC) will cost approximately $2,000 each. We are asking you to join us to raise funding for the materials for one ESCs for next year ... $2,000!
Many in our community have been impacted by the need for temporary housing in the past year. From homelessness to wildfires, the need for an immediate yet short-term place to sleep is invaluable.
But what exactly is an Emergency Sleeping Cabin (ESC)?
It is a small, moveable structure that provides temporary housing for displaced individuals. The current California Building Code currently allows jurisdictions to allow these structures to be built and placed in approved sites to address immediate and short-term housing needs.
The simplest way to describe an Emergency Sleeping Cabin:
It’s like a small shed in your backyard, but with electricity, lighting, HVAC, and safety aspects.
Have these been built anywhere else?
Yes, California cities such as El Cajon, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Jose have built or plan to build ESCs. Several have designated these ESC’s to address the housing needs of their homeless population. However, these could also be used to address housing needs due to natural disasters and other emergent circumstances.
Who will design and build these structures at Fresno State?
The Department of Construction Management houses two bachelor of science majors: Architectural Studies (AS) and Construction Management (CM). The upper-division CM students will manage the overall design and construction process, the upper-division AS students will design the structures based on local code requirements, and lower-division AS and CM students will build the project. Additionally, faculty and local industry professionals will provide support throughout the project.
When will this project take place?
This design/build lab experience will take place during the Fall 2022 semester.

Your financial gift will provide the support to make this project a reality! While the structures are small, the materials are estimated to be over $2,000 for an ESC.
Every project requires a bunch of suppliers. These are the individuals and organizations that provide the tools, equipment, and materials for the project.
Projects often start with a developer. The person who has the idea, and the money, to make a vision become a reality.
The designer takes the developer's vision and puts it on paper. Each designer's talent brings the project from a concept to a tangible product.
The builder takes the designer's work and makes it a reality. Each builder's craftsmanship creates the building and structure that we utilize in our everyday life.
Once the project is built, it doesn't stop there. Someone has to keep it up and running. That's where the sustainer fits in.
Nearly every project needs a set of generous benefactors. These are people that share their financial abundance with others.
