Who are we?
We are the Fresno chapter of SPS, the Society of Physics Students. For years our purpose has been to help students build their skills and prepare them to contribute in the professional scientific community. While coursework sets a good foundation in students’ knowledge, it often isn’t enough for a student to succeed in the professional environment. To compensate, SPS provides students with various opportunities for exposure to a professional setting, and functions as a space for students to discuss with each other, effectively building their network of connections and their communication skills (all while having fun, of course).
The Cause
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be running things differently this year. Rather than planning trips to various places like labs and research centers, we intend to host different online events in order to keep our students active within physics, including but not limited to: panels consisting of professionals and/or graduate students, colloquia explaining different research areas, and online physics tournaments to help students solidify their understanding on the subject. Our goal this semester is to emulate the in-person SPS experience and prepare students for their futures in the scientific community.
How You Can Help
Donating will help us financially in hosting these activities. In the case that students are to return to campus during the following semesters, SPS will once again host trips to labs and research centers, as well as various physics conventions. And so, funding will also assist us financially with these career trips. Additionally, we are currently experiencing a shortage of textbooks to be used by our undergraduate students. Some of the funds will go to supplying our undergraduate study room with more textbooks and other necessities to streamline the undergraduate learning experience.
With a donation of $10, we'll be able to supply our shared study rooms with more learning essentials and provide our students with a friendlier learning environment.
Your contribution will help us supply our students with textbooks which they may share in our study rooms, and lower the total amount that they are paying for college overall.
Your contribution will give our students the ability to go on trips to national labs and research centers, exposing them to the professional research environment and potential careers.
