OUR PROJECT:
The Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute has a goal is to capture the inspiring stories of the Portuguese-American experience in California through the invaluable art of storytelling. Through video, we can connect multiple generations to the history, culture and perseverance of Portuguese-Americans by educating and preparing Fresno State students to the technique and craft of collecting oral histories.
The Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute is the hub of cultural, literary and pedagogical resources to promote the Portuguese legacy in the Valley.
Our goal for the video is to:
1. Collect the stories of the Portuguese-American experience in California
2. Teach Fresno State students the art of collecting oral histories of prior generations giving the students a link to the past as they prepare for the future
3. Bring community members together in an inclusive project that will encompass various generations, experiences and traditions - constructing a bridge between the community and the university.
4. Prepare educators and train secondary students to acquire the tools they need to connect to the past—preparing future leaders that are cognizant of their past.
